About the archive
The Black Belt 100 Lenses archive contains over 5,000 images created by over 150 students living in Alabama's twelve Black Belt counties. It also features portraits of the students themselves, collections of work selected for exhibits, and photos of events, exhibit openings, student sessions, and the Black Belt 100 Lenses Summer Camp.

The process
Each 100 Lenses participant is loaned a 35mm point and shoot camera and asked to photograph both positive and negative aspects of their community. After shooting a roll of color photos and a roll of black and white photos, groups of 100 Lenses students convene to discuss the significance of their photographs. The students write about the photographs they feel are most relevant to them and their community, one or two of which are then selected to display in public exhibits in their counties and around the state.
All of their photos are archived here, organized by the county where the student lives.
